What is Niche SEO?

Niche SEO is the set of activities we do to rank for a keyword (or keywords) in a certain niche. These activities differ from one niche to another based on how that niche operates.

Niche SEO is the set of activities we do to rank for a keyword (or keywords) in a certain niche. These activities differ from one niche to another based on how that niche operates.

For example, in cryptocurrency, there exists a very high number of users with a low revenue per user. Here, the most common form of SEO is Informational SEO. Similarly, for B2B niches like corporate banking, there is a very widespread audience but the average revenue per user is high. Here, commercial keywords and SEO play a central role.

Niche vs Sub-Niche

A niche is a special market within an industry or sector which has unique characteristics, market dynamics, consumer behavior and its own set of principles. Even if two niches exist within the same industry, say mobile phones, their behavior might be completely different with respect to changes in factors such as price.

An example of this would be iPhones vs Android. The iPhone market is not price sensitive but the Android market reacts completely different to price changes. A real life example would be the launch of Nothing Phone 3 which was launched at $799. Despite having high-end features, the phone was dislike due to its pricing, which was similar to iPhones.

Even within the same niche, there exist multiple smaller niches called Sub-Niche. These are the different markets within a greater niche. Let us take the example of Android Phones. Even inside Android phone niche, there are at least three sub-niches, budget android (within say $200), mid-range android ($200 to $700) and flagships ($700 to $1500). All the sub-niches react completely to the same factors.

Micro Niches

Micro Niches are even smaller niches with a very limited market size. These niches are characterized by special taste for certain features and aspects of the product.

Continuing with the example of mobile phone, a Micro Niche could be Linux-based phones. This micro niche is characterized by very specialized demand, strong adherence to principles, lack of brand loyalty and in some cases, a passive aggressive attitude.

Keyword Research for Niche SEO

Google and all search engines use keywords to identify relevant content on their platforms. This makes keywords important for website’s ranking. We all know that too many keywords makes the page spammy and too low keyword count could make it almost invisible.

Therefore, the right balance has to be struck between number of keyword and the total number of words in the content. Our experience of writing thousands of articles per year suggests that usually this number is around 2% in modern articles. However, in rare cases, it may be less than 1% and even around 10%. As long as the article sounds natural, the number of keywords used in an article is balanced.

Keyword Structure with Core Keyword and Long Tails

Futher, keywords also need to be in a structure which means you should have the core keyword of the article (say budget android phone), in H1 (i.e., the title page). The H2s should contain the long-tail version of these keywords like budget android phones in 2025 or why should you buy a budget android phones. This goes on for H3, H4, H5 and H6.

NOTE: The long-tail version of the keywords can exist in any order and not necessarily as they appear in the main title. This is because all search engines including Google can relate between the variations of the same keyword by a couple of methods called Related Keywords and Latent Search Indexing.

Alt Text for Images and Videos

The Alt Text should be descriptive of the image because it is rendered when the image does not load for any reason. This is different than caption which is displayed with the image.

For Alt Texts of Images and Videos too, a long-tail version of the core keyword is to be used unless the image shows something else, maybe for reference.

Still, try to include as many images and videos as possible (without disturbing the flow of reading).

Further, linking should be done only to relevant pages that contain more information on the topic. For example, if a topic says about waterproofing, the linking should be done to IP waterproofing ratings. However, if you are providing all the additional information on your page, you can choose to have zero external links.

Backlinking for Niche SEO

Unlike ordinary websites or general ones, niche websites need specialized backlinks and therefore the SEO working on those sites must understand the relevancy of the backlinks.

Backlinks which are natural should be allowed to remain unless they are spam websites (like link sellers porn, gambling, adult, etc.).

For new backlinks, these are the recommendations

  • Try to get backlinks from relevant and industry-related websites via outreach.
  • Buy old domains for links if they are of decent quality and have a low spam score.
  • Non-industry backlinking should be avoided unless they are from news websites or sites that mention you by our brand name (brand mention).
  • Always try to get do follow backlinks as these have highest link juice.
  • No follow backlinks should be avoided unless they are from a high DA website (>50).
  • The sites from which links are to be created should have a traffic of at least 100 visitors per month.
